The company Petaquilla Gold is not responsible for the alleged contamination of the Molejon and San Juan de Turbe river which supposedly resulted in the death of fishes reported by residents from neighboring communities of the project, located in the District of Donoso, in the province of Colon, reported Antonio Sánchez, who was responsible for direct study by Ambiente e Industria S.A. (AINSA) and also has a Bachelor´s degree in Chemistry.
Mr. Sanchez explained that immediately after the complaint was made by of the residents, the company moved to the area and took samples of water in different parts of the Molejon and San Juan de Turbe rivers, in order to carry out the study which determined by its results that “the chemical and physical parameters of what was tested on the site, reveal the content is solid and saline product of the erosion of the lands caused by the rain”.
The specialist revealed that the values for the nitrate and nitrite substances obtained by the method of analysis were quite low and within the normal ranges for surface waters and it was determined that the cyanide content in the water was less than 0.001 mg/l, indicating that human activity could not have affect the cyanide content of the material.
“The 2610-EAC-111 standard of the ACP indicates a value of 0.2 mg/L for material found on the tributaries of the bodies of water.” The project indicates values of Cyanide < 0.01 as low risk. The values found through testing are 10 times smaller. The origin of the cyanide content in the water comes from the natural environment, since that mine has not entered into its production or operation stage,” said the expert in the field of Chemistry.
Mr. Sanchez said that the study also found pH ranges between 7 and 8, which indicates that there is no alteration to waters due to anthropogenic factors in the sampled rivers and by Panamanian standards for waters, the normal range is between the PH 6.5 and 8.5 PH.
