Petaquilla Gold and Christmas

It is repetitive to hear that Christmas is a time of peace, love, solidarity, sharing, because in the depths of our spirit we recognize the values that should prevail in our behavior as human beings. However, How much do we do to allow these values to lead our lives. The consumerism that has taken over the celebration of Christmas makes our children, from early childhood, grow up with a misperception of the true meaning of this holiday, which represents the detachment for the sake of allowing the rewarding experience of sharing. That’s what Christmas is for Christians: the detachment that our God made of His son, for love, so that we would be acquitted of our sins, giving us a sacrifice. But, instead, we still do not appreciate the gesture of love that represents the birth, life and death of Jesus, and every year we commemorate his birth with opposing actions to the legacy he left us. We misunderstand the meaning of peace, pretending that it means to be in harmony with the family, closest friends and loved ones when peace should be inside us and then outward to the rest of humanity, not only with whom we bond together with, but even with those with whom we have our differences. We understand the sharing as action with a hidden effect of reciprocity by giving gifts to loved ones or those whom we have a social commitment. However, we deny what is more noble and pleasing to a human being: respectful treatment and a sincere and a true sense and commitment to a peaceful life. Let us use the holidays to make a stop on our way and return these values within us and that for social and labor pressures we refuse to develop the desire not to lose those misunderstood social values that keep us from enjoying a life in harmony with ourselves and others, understood as physical, mental and moral wellbeing.
