Mining is part of Panama´s idiosyncrasy

Mining is part of Panamanian identity and although it has not developed into one of the main activities within the country´s economy; it does represent an important commitment to solving the serious economic problems that affect different region of the country.

Panama has been no stranger to this type of project, we should not forget that the construction of the Panama Canal and it´s expansion represent one of the largest and most important mining projects of the region, characterized by the use of high-end technology and environmental and ecological system protection.

The article, “Mining in Panama, a little history” ,in the ‘Mining in Panama and the world’ magazine published by The Mining Chamber of Panama (CAMIPA) and the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MICI) mentions that the geological make-up coupled with an extraordinary geographical position has allowed discovery of large underground metal deposits such as gold and copper mainly.

The extraction of these resources is part of a State policy to support the mining activity of these centers, with the purpose of achieving an integral development of the communities surrounding them, says the document.

It states that currently Panama has twelve gold and copper mining projects, some of which are in a very advanced evaluation stage, although only one is in the extraction stage: The Petaquilla Gold Project, led by entrepreneur Richard Fifer- Carles in the Molejon area, district of Donoso, province of Colon.

The document goes on to state that if the Panama and Cerro Colorado copper mining projects start operating, Panama will become the ninth largest copper producer in the world, accompanied by  mining countries with a vast trajectory and diverse economies such as Peru, Chile, México  and Brazil

“Just these two projects place us within the 15 largest copper mines operating in the world, changing the global perception about Panama and placing it next to mining giants”, it said.

In the case of Cerro Colorado, it is a porphyry deposit with 1,400 million tons of reserved mineralized rock, with an average exploitation grade of 0.78 per cent. Economic feasibility studies suggest that Cerro Colorado can be exploited for a period of 70 consecutive years, with possibilities of duplication.
