It has always been said that the Azuero region is the cradle of folklore and of the expressions that largely make the Panamanian national identity, an environment where everything from food, housing, architecture and artistic expressions leave that feeling that Panama flies.

Therefore, Castilla del Oro Foundation, drives projects geared to enhance all that wealth, so it becomes the main product to offer local and foreign visitors.

In that sense, Las Tablas’s mayor, Edison González, expressed pride and satisfaction because there is a foundation such as Castilla del Oro, interested in projecting and exploiting the region’s tourism and cultural potential.

“It’s a culture we inherited from our Spanish ancestors and Castilla del Oro leads the work to rescue and promote folklore, tourism, economic and social development of the country’s central region.”

He described this organization’s work as “magnificent” as no other party had become interested in calling the main actors in communities, that is local governments and engage them in these projects.

“The Castilla del Oro Foundation took them into account to develop these projects because they know they are the ones next to their communities every day of the year and know their needs, their idiosyncrasies and the cultural values of their people,” he added.

González, who also traveled to Spain at the invitation of the Foundation, said that the journey through Spanish land allowed him to see that peoples’ culture, folklore and traditions can become a source of income.

He said that in places like Las Tablas cultural and folkloric expressions were looked upon as fun, but with the foundation’s support a dynamism will be applied that will allow them to market products such as the national dress, the tamborito, dances, and the church of the patron, Saint Librada.

It is a matter of marketing the tourism potential for others to come to know it. This oxygenates the economy, there are no major industries here, and this will help rural communities.

“Tourism potential is the opportunity for many people from Los Santos and Herrera that have migrated to the capital in search of better opportunities to return to exploit the tourism potential,” the mayor of Las Tablas stated.
