Berrocal: proceedings passage between the mine and the Empire

Madrid, August 2011

The Castilla del Oro Foundation lands on a new project in Spain, more specifically in Helva (Cerro del Andevalo).  For this reason we invite you to learn the history, traditions and life in general of this place in the Old Europe, where the Castilla del Oro Foundation takes on a new challenge; to develop what its driving force, Engineer Richard Fifer-Carles, calls Second Generation Social Responsibility.

THE PEOPLE OF BERROCAL

On a small hill, on the most western part of Andevalo in Huelva, at the left bank of the famous Tinto river and between the Alabarderos Sierra, the Enmedio Sierra, and the Picota Sierra, is located the small village of Berrocal, with its particular beauty caused by its geographical situation and the richness of its landscape.

Heiress of the terrestrial mineral traffic between Rio Tinto and Guadalquivir, Berrocal sinks its roots in the Imperial Roman era.  Since those years, a Roman road joined the Mines of Rio Tinto –from where the Empire extracted a significant part of the mineral it needed for its development, growth, and defense- with the Guadalquivir River, which was used as the waterway to ship the material to the Empire’s capital.

There are news of the existence of a proceedings passage for stables, in the area where Berrocal is located today, that gave service to the traffic on the way to Guadalquivir, which can be identified as the first traces of an incipient population center.

Berrocal is evidence of how the geography of the natural resources and the economical activities that served as the foundation for the development of a village, or in this case the lines of communication, decisively influenced the formation of town centers and the distribution of the population within the territory.
